EarthFest Festivities!

This Saturday, May 22, is the 17th annual Radio 92.9 EarthFest! And the weather forecast looks great!

The free (yes, FREE!!) festival showcases national and local music acts, environmentally friendly products and local non-profit environmental organizations. For the past three years, my family has gone to the Hatch Shell for EarthFest’s music, food and fun. This year we are excited to bring our son to EarthFest too! We love it and wouldn’t miss it, so here are the details for you EarthFest newbies:

The Radio 92.9 EarthFest is presented by Whole Foods and runs from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. However, there are some great kids activities that begin at 10 a.m to teach kids about healthy living, environmental science and conservation. For example, there is an obstacle course (hosted by Boston Sports Club), face painting (hosted by Whole Foods), exhibits by the Massachusetts Federation of Farmers Markets, the Girl Scouts of America and more.  The Diaper Lab will be sponsoring a Diaper Changing and Nursing Station and will provide wristbands for children to ensure their parents can be located quickly in the event they get separated.  Cardi’s Furniture is also sponsoring an on-site, first of its kind Stroller Valet service.  Love that they are making it a great family friendly event!

Musical shows on the Kids Planet stage begin at 10:15 am and this year’s performers include:

  • Debbie Cavalier (11:00 a.m.)- She is a dean at Berklee College of Music, but she is also the leader pop group Debbie and Friends.
  • Ben Rudnick and Friends (12:15 p.m.)- The band both produces their own original folk-rock music and creates fun takes on well known songs.  They are also five time Parents Choice Award winners.
  • Zumix (1:45 p.m.)A youth community arts group created in 1991 in East Boston, MA.  Members represent all of Boston’s diverse communities.  The non-profit arts and cultural organization offers children an avenue to explore their passions in music and give back to the community with local arts performances.
  • Black Diamonds (3:15 p.m.)Children’s entertainment for kids, by kids!  Comprised of five local children ages 8 – 12.  A fun, rock anthem band, Black Diamonds covers music from Bon Jovi to The Who, and also will perform their original song, “Almost Famous”.

On the main stage, musical performances will begin at 12:00 noon.  Performers for the event include headliner Collective Soul, the Gin Blossoms, Crash Kings and Marcy Playground.  Also beginning at 12:00 is the section where you can try out yummy organic and natural foods.

Of course, you can get to EarthFest by car.  The Boston Common Garage is probably the closest garage in the area. But since this is EarthFest, taking public transit or your bike would keep with the theme. Just take the Green Line to Arlington Street or take the Red Line to Charles Street / MGH or a bike valet service is available on site courtesy of MassBike and International Bicycles.
